Advice for a happy home during the process

Playing with your dog is fun. Dog training is often fun. Taking the dog out for a walk is refreshing.

It ain’t much fun but it is easy

To be perfectly honest, the noise phobia therapy will not necessarily be what you would call “fun.” But the good thing is that noise phobia therapy isn’t much work either. You do mostly nothing – you can even do whatever you like as long as it isn’t very noisy – while the audio equipment does the job.

Since noise phobia therapy is about hearing sounds that you can expect to hear in many locations in our modern society, you will get used to it. You can relieve yourself while the sounds are playing, as seciton 3 says below.

However, as the volume increases in the latter Steps in the process, hearing these sounds may become boring, if the person hasn’t been pre-conditioned to hear, and to tolerate, the noises. This can become a problem, even if the Natural Intervals add a relaxing, silent interval between the therapy sounds.

“A spoonful of sugar…”

Mary Poppins, in the movie Sound of Music, sang the line “a spoonful of sugar, makes the medicine go down.” We MUST make this process well bearable, to keep you and everyone else happy.

You should keep your spirits up, for all of you!

Advice For A Happy Home

Happy Tip # 1 smiling-sun-45x45px-jpg

Envision The Positive Outcome Of The Therapy

When you are preparing or doing the sound phobia therapy, always keep in mind the hopefully healthier, happier and more secure dog this will produce. Envision that instead the other option, an anxious dog who feels he may be threatened by common noises, that you yourself aren’t afraid of. Doing this therapy is well worth while.

Happy Tip # 2

Bored? Reward Yourself After The Sound Session(s)

If some of the sounds in this therapy are really getting on your nerves, perhaps under the end of the therapy when they are played fairly loudly, then “offer” yourself some little reward for doing this therapy. For instance some small object you desire, after five or ten rounds of the therapy, or whatever number you choose.

This might be an ice-cream or some delicacy, a trip to the movies, a book or DVD/blueray disc you desire. Just something small that will make you feel good about having done this properly.

Happy Tip # 3

smiling-sun-45x45px-jpgIf You Dislike The Sounds, You Can Listen To Music Or Audiobook In Headphones

If you really dislike the sounds, you have the option of masking them out by listening to music or perhaps an audio book, that is stored on your smartphone or maybe your MP3 audio player. You would be listening to these using good headphones. It is better, if they are closed, so they shelter you from the sounds around you.

Don’t hesitate to do this, but still make sure you will be able to notice what is happening around you.

Happy Tip # 4

Offer Others In The Household Similar Rewards As Yourself

Make sure that all human members of your household know what is going on, and understand it, regardless of age. The suggestions of small rewards for going through the steps of the therapy could be used for other family members, if necessary.

Happy Tip # 5

You The Owner (Or The Handler) Must Stay Close To The Dog. Others Can Sneak Out?

If playing these sounds gets on the nerves of some family member, then of course that family member may have the option of sneaking out, or closing his or her room, while this is going on.

Just make sure that there is no hint of stiff, uncomfortable or unnatural talking or behaving, some sort of ritual, when the person is leaving the scene. Just let it happen casually. Otherwise your dog might pick up the pattern and make some connection. The sounds are supposed to appear sporadically, without reason, and the people present must not react to them.

Happy Tip # 6

Stay At Peace With Your Neighbors

At the beginning of this therapy, there is really no need to say anything to anyone. The sound is so low that a telephone ringing or the normal sound from your TV is louder. But as the therapy evolves towards the natural sound volume level, you might need to inform your neighbors about what you are doing, especially if you live in an apartment building, (this is probably less necessary in a house).

You may find out when they are not at home, and organize the therapy according to that, if possible. Also, if you play sounds outside, in your garden or in the park for instance, think about other people and pets that are nearby.

Try to get their consent via friendly and considerate dialog, as it is not the goal to exchange one problem (noise phobia) with another – irritated neighbors!
